On The Lot
Vvids is a small home studio. Currently using a Cannon camcorder, web cams and a Panasonic SV-AV20 to capture scenes,
editing in ArcSoft Showbiz and Movie Maker. Recording using Cakewalk Studio with a Mackie mixer.
Vocals for our music videos are provided by Dan and the Dannettes and the Danster Quartet Minus One. |
In October of 2006 I intended to do a music video about not wanting to go to the dentist. I recorded the song, but never got around to the video, in part because I wasn't satisfied with the song. But I did an instrumental version with Ben on drums, and I really liked it.
Finally in May of 2008 we got the frogs out and filmed it. It is meant to be humorous, but mellow. Doing it required making a guitar for the lead frog. It is actually a picture of a guitar glues onto a piece of wood that is cut out to match its shape, but it looks good in the video.
I still don't want to go to the dentist. |

A classic tale of twarted love on the lilly pad. Not only was it necessary to make four frogs, but band instruments as well. But the frogs make a pretty good combo.

This video is a tribute to one of the great stand-up comedians
specifically, and all of the great vaudevillian comics in general.
Sometimes a star is born, sometimes a star is constructed with foam and
hot glue!
Our 6'x3' set was redressed with a red fleece (who needs velvet!)
curtain and hung near the ceiling to make plenty of room for the
puppeteer. Sound-wise, puppet movies are easier than live action,
because
we record the sound track first, and play it during the shooting so the
puppets can lip-synch, or in this case, beak-synch.
The camera microphone picks up the sound, which makes editing simpler,
since we just match the sound on the tape to the actual sound track to
line things up.
This one was shot in two basic takes, one long shot and
one close-up. These long takes were broken up when we captured the
video
onto the computer, and further edited as we went along.

This one was also made for AOL, with a life-management theme, making resolutions to improve body and soul.
Things don't go exactly as planned, though. The Resolution-O-Meter predicts how much success each resolution will have.

Well, it's been a while, but we're BACK! For years Rosemary West has
been sending me cows, and Eric Isaacson got into the act as well. So a
cow video was inevitable, and here's one that includes a very
moooooving song! |

This is the first video we built puppets specially for.
Over the course of several weeks 5 puppets were constructed. The first TLC (The Lovable Curmudgeon)
video was to be a comic monologue, but when the Hawaiian shirt, sunglasses and hat came home, it
was clear that his premier video had to be "Ukulele Lady." |

Well, if I thought Hare Witch was a rush job, Holiday Antlers wins the prize for fast production.
Also made for AOL, this video was put together in a couple of hours.
There was an amusing outtake moment: we did about a half dozen takes, and in the fourth one
the dog pranced into the frame just as Allison said, "Can we please get a dog?"

Another rush job for AOL, this shows that living in the woods can come in handy sometimes. This is a spoof on "The
Blair Witch Project," with ears.
This one was taped first, and the
sound was dubbed later, mainly because filming on location in the soggy woods wasn't conducive to dragging a laptop around.
Three sound tracks were used -- the sound of feet running in the woods was picked up by the camera. The voices were dubbed in
Cakewalk Studio, and the eerie sound effects made up the third track.

This was another one made for an AOL holiday feature, this time for
Father's Day. A spoof
on the classic "Dragnet," Detective Sonday is trying to find his
missing Dad. Deadlines being what they are, this was put together
in about a day, with video taking about three hours on a Saturday
morning and editing in the afternoon.
It was really a miracle, as there was no time to learn lines, and the
interview scene was
quite long, with the classic "Dragnet" style dialog. But the kids came
through with flying colors, and Detective Sergeant Sonday
solved the case.
"Dadnet" was featured on AOL for Fathers Day in 2004.
Some unexpected stars, both Gracie and Spot the cats made sure they had roles in the video. Gracie even took an
unscripted speaking part.
